As a Nikon Pro (NPS member) I am often asked what photo equipment do I carry when I am out shooting on assignment? My response is always the same, “As little as possible!” I have found over the years that too much camera gear will not only bog one down with what to use and when, but more importantly, less equipment allows the artist in your soul to spend more time concentrating on the creative process. Remember, the artist is the defining factor not the tools.
For over 30 years I have used Nikon cameras and lenses exclusively and have never been disappointed or felt the need to change brands. The Nikon D3 and D3s digital cameras are the best cameras on the market for producing clean, low noise images at high ISOs and the Nikon lenses are the best. Over the years I have used an arsenal of Nikon lenses from a 10.5mm fisheye to a 500mm mirror lens. That being said, ongoing refinement of my tools and my personal visual style has brought me to use the following equipment on my assignments:
- Nikon D3
- Nikon D300
- Nikon D2x (Currently being used as a door stop!)
- Nikon AFS 16-35mm VR f4
- Nikon AFS 50mm f1.4 (Every photographer should own one of these!)
- Nikon AFS 17-55mm f2.8 DX
- Nikon AFS 60mm f2.8 Macro
- Nikon AFS 70-200 mm f2.8 VR
- Nikon AFS 70-300 mm f4.5-5-6 VR
- Several Nikon SB-800 Flashes (Used sparingly, as my prime shooting style is natural light.)
